About me
Mary Dorsey is the Cytology Supervisor at Danbury Hospital, supporting the Cytopathology service within the Northwel Health System, Nuvance Market. With over 20 years of experience, she has committed her career to advancing the field of cytology through education, innovation, and leadership. Mary specializes in improving cell blocking techniques to maximize the diagnostic value of small cellular samples while preserving antigenicity for immunohistochemistry and molecular testing. She developed these skills at Columbia University Medical Center and applied them in leadership roles at Diagnostic Pathology Medical Group in Sacramento and now at Nuvance.
As a former president of the New Jersey Association of Cytology, Mary led educational initiatives for professionals across the New York Tri-state area. She presented on topics such as gynecologic morphology and the Paris System for reporting urinary cytopathology, and contributed to national conferences with research on quality indicators in cervical screening. She also addressed broader issues affecting the field, including the shift to HPV screening, the rise of molecular diagnostics, artificial intelligence, and the evolving role of cytologists in modern medicine.
In addition to her scientific expertise, Mary holds an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a concentration in Data Analytics and Operations. Her business background enhances her ability to lead strategic improvements in lab operations. At DPMG, she streamlined collaboration between Cytology and Molecular labs, improved turnaround times, and increased efficiency while maintaining quality. At Nuvance Health, she has led initiatives to optimize scheduling, bring procedures in-house, and enhance overall workflow, leading to significantly improved turnaround times for partner facilities.
Outside of work, Mary enjoys science fiction and fantasy literature and is currently listening to the full cast audio edition of The Harry Potter series. She also enjoys exploring global cuisine and learning about different cultures through food.
