About me
Barbara Spielman, BSN, RN, currently serves as Manager of Patient Care for the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Ambulatory Surgery, and Preadmission Testing at Norwalk Hospital, a community hospital within the Northwell system in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Previously, she was the Surgical Quality Coordinator at the same facility. Her diverse nursing background spans the Emergency Department, Special Needs Pediatrics, School Nursing, Homecare, Hospice, Case Management, and Surgical Quality.
Barbara holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the University of Maryland School of Business. After finding business unfulfilling, she followed in her father’s footsteps and pursued nursing through Johns Hopkins University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received the Sinai Nurses Alumna Association Award for creative patient care and a grant for In War and Peace: Sustainable Development, Refugees, and Human Rights in Guatemala.
Barbara is board-certified in case management and has participated in the American College of Surgeons CT Quality Collaborative. As a Patricia A. Tietjen, MD Teaching Academy Scholar, her work on utilizing the M&M platform for educating PA Residents and moving the needle on quality benchmarks to improve patient care, “Utilizing the Morbidity and Mortality Conference for Education and Quality” poster was presented at the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Conference. Her article “Practicing in Someone Else’s Playground,” published in School Nurse News, highlights the adaptability of nurses in providing excellent, patient centered care across diverse settings.
Outside of her professional life, Barbara enjoys time with her husband, their three adult children, and two rescue dogs. Her favorite days are spent hiking, golfing, playing pickleball, kayaking or canoeing on the lake, and sharing great books with friends.
